Saturday kicked off with blistering sun and the Canadian duo, JAPANDROIDS. They sweated, they rocked, they yelled, and it was beautiful. THE ALABAMA SHAKES followed, with Brittany and the boys strutting onto stage and pouring out their souls. THE ARTIC MONKEYS swaggered on afterwards and, even though they sent the front of house speakers into overload, they never missed a beat. Alex Turner cracked me up, walking around like a T-Bird from Grease and winning over the crowd. They played about 2 songs from each album. Next was PASSION PITT, who was also incredible with their unique blend of happy dance music. THE POSTAL SERVICE closed out the night with Jenny Lewis bringing magic to the stage and even showing off a few new songs. As I walked home in the cool night, CALVIN HARRIS's "Feels So Close" resonated "like a waterfall..."
The first show we caught Sunday was MATT&KIM. They were shockingly hilarious: Matt was like an shy Ewan McGregor, while Kim (his "partner in sex") was a foul-mouthed, booty-dancing drummer. Standing on her kick drum in the middle of songs and even crowd-surfing. MACKLEMORE followed with his enjoyable style and even found a fur coat in the crowd (it was surfed up to the stage and he donned it proudly for "Thriftshop"). Afterwards, TV ON THE RADIO jammed with such creative mastery it was mind boggling. Tossing windchimes on guitars, effecting voices and being badasses in general, the band barely spoke except to praise other acts like MAVIS STAPLES and MATT&KIM. The night ended in trippy light show of a sweaty dance party with BASSNECTAR. Ah that sweet, sweet bass…
